Marilyn McDonald - Ironman Champion, Professional Cyclist
From Marilyn's blog, www.trimacca.com:
"If you know me you, know I am super picky about my bike fitting. I have said often I have "princess and the pea" syndrome with my bike fit. I have been to many many different bike fit people over the years to educate myself on all the different styles out there. I am huge on feel and fit on your equipment. Maybe that comes from my equestrian days where every little piece of equipment had to be just right or things were out of balance. I also respect a bike fitter who can really listen to an athlete. Generally a good athlete has a style or feel they are looking for to feel strong.
This week I went to Retul to have my bike positions looked at. The guys at Retul are great! Experienced, they listen, and their technology for your fit is like nothing I've ever seen. The guessing is taken right out of the picture. The technology they have developed dials you right in to the perfect range and the experience of the guys and the equipment can set you up right into the perfect position.
I came to them with a chronic niggle. Being an experienced athlete I could feel it was something in my position that was repeatably hurting me. But nobody to date could see what it was. Within minutes the guys could see 3 things that would help me.
My seat was way too high. To the eye you couldn't tell at all. I've had plenty of experts and friends have a look and all couldn't see that it was high, but with the new technology of Retul they could see right away it was really high and contributing to hurting me.
The next thing was my crank length is too long for
the length of my legs. Nobody would have ever looked at this. They
could see right away with the ranges I have cranks that are too long
and that is definitely a player in my pain.
The final thing was I have custom orthotics, I actually am an orthotic nut!! I have alot of orthotics trying to help me. They could see that right away I needed just a bit more support on the right and a little less on the left. All things so slight that the naked eye of many experts couldn't see. But to them it was obvious.
All these changes made great sense to me and most of all I could feel it was right.
I
was super happy and super impressed with their knowledge, their ability
to listen and their experience! I also LOVED the fact you leave there
with a dialed in print out of your exact fit. So when you change bikes,
travel, etc you have your exact fit on paper with exact measurements to
dial in any bike you ride. That's HUGE if you crash, loose a bike in
travel, etc and need a new bike on the spot!!
So...Thanks to the
guys at Retul. I'm hard to impress with bike fitting, I'm a tough
sale. These guys definitely impressed me and I feel it was a good
investment!
